Julian Knight scores major victory in anti-payday lending campaign

Solihull Council has signed up to a cross-party national ‘Stop the Payday Loan Rip Off’ charter, after a successful campaign by Julian Knight, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Solihull.Julian has been calling on Solihull council to sign up to the charter and to commit to ban advertising from payday lenders. On Tuesday, a motion proposed by Silhill councillor Rob Hulland to sign Solihull council up to the Stop the Payday Loan Rip-Off charter was passed.  This followed a debate on the increasing impact that payday lending was having on the lives of the people of Solihull. 

Karren Brady visits Shirley in Conservative Small Business role

LOCAL Resident Karren Brady was in the town recently to promote her role as the Conservative Party’s Small Business Ambassador.She was invited to view Parkgate works in Shirley and meet local small businessmen and women by Solihull’s Conservative Parliamentary Candidate and Local Campaigner, Julian Knight.Julian Knight said: “Parkgate is going to be fantastic facility for Shirley and I wanted Karren to see first-hand how it was progressing. She was definitely impressed with the potential of Parkgate. It is going to offer Shirley so much including business, residential and environmental opportunities. “The icing on the cake was Karren’s very successful Q&A with Solihull small businesses. You just have to look at Shirley High Street to see how important these firms are to the area. Both this Government and I, as a local campaigner, are committed to helping these companies grow.”

Caroline Spelman MP welcomes traveller site decision

Local MP Caroline Spelman has welcomed a decision by Eric Pickles, Secretary of State at the Department of Communities and Local Government to refuse an appeal by the travellers at the Eaves Green Lane site in Meriden.Caroline commented, “Residents have been waiting a long time for the resolution of the legal battles around unauthorised development in the Green Belt in Meriden.  The Planning Inspector took the view that the site reduces the openness of the countryside, presents a road safety hazard and compounds flood risk at this location.  The most important factor in the decision is the provision of additional authorised traveller sites by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council so that there are spare places for gypsies and travellers to reside in the Borough.  I commend SMBC for this”.

KFC Appeal Update

Cllr Gary Allport and local Campaigner, Angela Sandison, just wanted to let you know that the KFC inquiry has now closed.  This ran for 4 days instead of the planned 2 days.  It took longer than expected because of extensive cross examination by KFC’s barrister.  KFC took a very aggressive stance to try to get their application through.

ONLY 10 PER CENT OF SOLIHULL AND BIRMINGHAM PARENTS THINK THEIR CHILD IS SAFE ONLINE Research carried out by internet security giant McAfee shows that just one in ten parents in Solihull and Birmingham believes that their child is safe while browsing the world wide web.The survey of over 1,000 parents also found that nearly two fifths of parents (37 per cent) are concerned about the potential of their child being bullied online.

Caroline Spelman MP calls on schools to participate in D-Day Landings Competition

To mark the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in 2014, the Sidney Goldberg Memorial Competition 2014 has been launched. This Competition, funded by his daughter Rachelle Goldberg, is aimed at school children of all ages to foster a greater understanding of the D-Day Normandy landings.There are a number of different tasks to do, ranging from research projects and essays to art projects, dependent on the age of the entrant.First Prize winners in each age category will travel to Normandy to see the D-Day landing sites with a parent.Caroline Spelman says, “the Sidney Goldberg Memorial Competition 2014 is a wonderful initiative to encourage children to discover more about the D-Day Normandy landings, those who took part and its place in our country’s history.  I would encourage every student to participate.”

Caroline Spelman MP delighted as funding will be made available for a development project at the North Arran Way GP premises in Solihull

After a long campaign, local MP Caroline Spelman is delighted that NHS England has confirmed that funding will be made available for a development project at the North Arran Way GP premises in Solihull. Caroline has been working hard with Dr Anand J Chitnis, Chair of NHS Solihull Clinical Commissioning Group, and Cllr Bob Sleigh, Chair of the Health & Wellbeing Board, for many months, to ensure that the development is able to go ahead.Caroline Spelman says “I am absolutely delighted that the funding has been agreed for the development of the North Arran Way GP premises.  This is a really significant decision for the community, which will go a long way to ensuring that the community has proper access to vital healthcare services.”

Nick Boles MP & Caroline Spelman MP are briefed on Solihulls £150m regeneration project

Nick Boles, Under Secretary of State with special responsibility for planning policy and communities was invited by Caroline Spelman MP to visit the ongoing £150m regeneration project in North Solihull.  Nick was taken to the new village centre in Smiths Wood to see new housing,the new schools and the site of the new GPs surgery funding for which was confirmed by NHS England only this week.

Nick was also able to see for himself the upgrading of the heating and cladding systems on two tower blocks which uses a Biomas fuel system to reduce energy costs to the residents.

Conservative led Solihull Council has maintained its committment to North Solihull regeneration despite a range of difficulties is securing ongoing funding.

Shirley Baptist Church re-opens after refurbishment

Julian Knight, Prospective MP for Solihull & Shirley East Conservative Councillors Mark Parker & Karen Grinsell attended the grand opening of the newly refurbished Shirley Baptist Church on Sunday 3rd November 2013.Cllr Mark Parker said “It was a pleasure to attend the opening and to see well over 200 people attend to celebrate the newly built facilities that will serve the Church, it's members and the wider community for many years to come. It is a fitting tribute to the hard work in planning and fund raising over many years. It will be a superb asset for the residents of Shirley”.
