Grant Shapps MP meets local Conservatives

Grant Shapps MP & Conservative Party Chairman took time out of his busy schedule recently to meet local Conservative activists and Party members at an event in the constituency.  Grant spent time talking to Meriden MP Caroline Spelman, and Solihull Parliamentary Candidate Julian Knight about the issues facing the area, including the great news that 1700 jobs are being created at Jaguar LandRover in Solihull. Caroline Spelman said  “We know we need to complete the job of economic recovery and my hope is the country will give my party the chance to do so”.

The news that Jaguar Land Rover is to create a further 1,700 jobs in Solihull is testament to the hard work, skill and perseverance of the workers and management at the plant off Lode Lane. Many of us will remember back to 2008, in the depths of the recession, the workforce was shrinking along with the order books. Those were dark days. But what we have seen since is one of the biggest turnarounds in not just West Midlands but British business history. Jaguar Land Rover produces vehicles which thrill the motoring world and are wanted in the emerging economies of India and China. What's more, unlike some other manufacturers, Jaguar Land Rover is keeping its manufacturing base firmly in the UK.

Julian Knight, Conservative parliamentary candidate and Solihull resident has welcomed the start of £600,000 improvement work to Shirley Park."The Park is the lungs of Shirley, a brilliant community resource which is going to get even better thanks to these improvements. Julian Knight urges Solihull’s small businesses to claim £3.2m in cash to boost apprenticeships

Julian Knight, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Solihull is calling on small businesses in the Borough to take part in the new 'Birmingham City deal' and claim cash awards for taking on apprenticeships. "Getting our young people into work and supporting small businesses are crucial to Solihull's continued economic success."I am urging small and medium sized businesses who have not claimed these grants to do so now and, if they can afford it, get an apprentice through their door."

Julian Knight’s victory to stop Shell garage on the Shirley Triangle selling alcohol through the night

Julian Knight, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Solihull, has won his campaign to prevent the proposed Shell garage on the Shirley Triangle at the top of Tamworth lane from selling alcohol through the night.Commenting on this result Julian Knight said: "This is a victory for the people of Shirley and for common sense. I along with local councillors and concerned residents were determined to stop this development becoming a magnet for ‘through the night drinkers’. It is a lovely residential area, full of hard working families who didn't want to be bothered by late night revellers looking for that one final drink of the night.""I welcome the sensible response of the site's owners to the heartfelt concerns of the people of Shirley and their backtracking on ‘through the night alcohol sales’."

Update on HS2 from your Bickenhill Councillors

Now that cross party support has been given to the paving bill on HS2,Conservatives locally have led cross party criticism of the Draft Environmental   Statement issued by HS2 for comment.  The formal response from SMBC sends a range of key messages to HS2 asking that these concerns are taken into account  before the formal proposals are published later in the year.  

Caroline Spelman MP delivers constituents petition on Barclays Bank closure

On the 17th July, Caroline Spelman handed over a petition signed by hundreds of constituents to the Government, protesting against the imminent closure of the Marston Green branch of Barclays Bank.The petitioners call for the Directors of Barclays Bank to suspend the proposed closure of this much-valued branch until proper consultation has been undertaken with the community, and with affected customers.MP  Caroline Spelman said:  “The Directors of Barclays Bank must not ignore the strength of public opinion on this.  The Marston Green branch makes a huge difference to the community, and everything should be done by Barclays to try to keep this branch open".
